Assisted Suicide

I chose to do my research project on medical ethics, more specifically, assisted suicide.  Assisted suicide, or physician assisted suicide, is when a terminally ill person chooses to take a pill that kill them, rather than suffering for an extended period of time just to reach the same result.  I read the book, Current Controversies: Assisted Suicide.  The book does a very good job of remaining neutral on the subject and lists both the pros and the cons of assisted suicide.  Many different experts from around the world all voice there knowledge and opinions on the subject giving you a complete view of it.  One of the pros is that its your life and you should have the right to die,  but one of the cons is that it would push poor patients into choosing a $50 suicide pill rather than undergoing treatment which could be tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Theses are only two of the issues under debate and the book provides an interesting read for those interested.

  1. Well I believe it should be allowed, its their life and no one else. In fact I think forcing someone to stay alive with a condition like that, should be illegal. That is the ultimate form of torture, to make someone live like that. Its good that your book stayed neutral though. Trying to read close minded books is not right. People should always hear both sides of an argument, before picking a side.

  2. This sounds like a very interesting book. I believe that if the pill for assisted suicide was legal then it could be abused by people with psychological disorders like depression or schizophrenia so it should not be legal. But I agree that it is an issue that is hard to stay neutral on and it must be a good book with a lot of info if experts from around the world contributed to the book

  3. This is a very unique topic to do your paper on. I am truly interested in reading the end result. I think that assisted suicide should be up to the patient, personally, because if they were in enough pain to want to be put out of it then they would be the only ones to know that. The pill situation does make it harder because I can see where a lot of people without money would use it purely because of their lack of money for treatment.

  4. I agree with pbain that the pill should be legal. I think the choisecond of treatment, life, death, or suffering should always be in the hands of that person. On the other hand it is disturbing that some people have to die because they can't afford to pay for expensive medical treatment. I don't think the controversy of thus pill is as important as fair medical treatment for all.
