The Knife

For my eighteenth birth day, my coach, gave me a six inch long Shun chef knife by KAI. Made in Japan from Japaneses steel and craftsmen ship. For course for a lot is just really sharp knife, but to me it is one of the finest pieces of art I have ever enjoyed. The way it fits in my hand just right and the pattern on the knife it self make it look like it is wood. It is just beautiful it me and puts most of my other chef knives to shame. http://www.cutleryandmore.com/shun-classic/chefs-knife-p16316 Link there to see it, if you chose to. A lot of you probably will not get where I am coming from ,which is fine none of you work in kitchens, but to me it far surpasses the Monaliesa in beauty to me.

  1. I like that you've found that art is not simply images or sounds. It doesn't even have to be special to everyone, as long as you believe that it is special. I can see that this particular chef knife means a lot to you. It is a special gift, something that fits you just right.

  2. Its really unique how the art form that you found meaningful was a chef knife, and I really liked how you gave a link to the exact blade that you received so we can all see it. The blade itself reminds me of a katana blade because of the stuttering color scheme. And i'm pretty sure everyone, at one point was interested in Japanese katanas. Great post

  3. I love blades that have the contour pattern in them. They are one of the most beautiful things I have every seen. It does remind me of a katana; the design is from the way the metal was folded. I love the fact that you compared this knife to the standard of art in our culture, the Mona Lisa, because art is a very individualistic thing. I like how your greatest piece of art, is a tool. It's not just art for art's sake, but it has a purpose. And it's just really cool to be able to use it for it's intended purpose as well as appreciate the skill it took to make it.

  4. I think it's amazing that the most meaningful experience to you is one of sheer simplicity. Not to say the knife is simple by any means, but to say that the thought of a knife as an everyday item is commonplace. I also think it's amazing that you found something that you can be this passionate about. I can tell by the way that you write and talk about it that cooking is an overwhelming part of your life and I think that's admirable.

  5. i personally don't feel that way about knives but like you said I don't work in the kitchen and there are a lot of things I find to be beautiful art you probably would think are stupid bbut that just goes to show that we all find beauty in things we love and understand. and yeah..thats a pretty awesome knife by the way.

  6. I don't really see how a knife can be seen as a most valuable piece of art, however I think it's cool that you chose something different to be your most valuable piece of art. Most people think of paintings or sculptures when it comes to artwork. I obviously can't relate because I don't work in the kitchen much, but I like how you are able to use your piece of artwork to create something.
