Assisted Suicide So Far

So far I've learned a lot about assisted suicide.  One of the things I have learned is that there is an almost equal amount of support for it as there is against it.  Generally,  frequent church goers believe that life is a gift from god so assisted suicide is wrong, but some say God gives us free will to choose our own path.  Lots of people also believe that unrelievable suffering is an unqualified evil, but others counter that argument with the fact that a life with suffering still has meaning.  Assisted suicide can also ruin the patient-doctor relationship, some say.  This argument is said to be invalid because by some because doctors can't always be healers.  In a survey, over 50% of people over the age of 65 said they were less likely to trust their doctor if it was legal.  Physician assisted suicide is a hot topic right now and still gets people riled up when it comes up.

  1. It is interesting how people are less likely to trust their doctors if it is legal. I don't see how even though it is the choice of the patients, they still think it will ruin their patient-doctor relationship. I agree that it should be legal because we do have free will. It would be interesting to connect saint Augustine's ethics with this topic. He would probably think it should be legal, but that if you choose it you are choosing the evil path over the good path.

  2. Thats very interesting that church goers are split on their decision whether assisted suicide is right or wrong. Has the pope ever said anything about the issue? It's also interesting how you say life with suffering still has meaning because some great people have suffered and fought for what they believe in. But usually suffering is caused by evil. I can understand why it's a hard decision to pick between the two.

  3. I understand completely why churches would be against assisted suicide considering it would be kind of ruining your natural path of life. I would not agree with it in all cases, but if someone was suffering and in a lot of pain and was on the brink of death anyways, it would be fathomable. I read somewhere once that in some countries the laws of assisted suicide are very vague and children are able to partake in it which i think is pretty messed up. Interesting topic!
